As I entered the room where the unanswered questions and wondering mind passed, I began to think what type of decisions and tasks will
take place in this career. The choice of this career was triggered by the incapability of interviewing my goal career. My first choice was the shadowing
of a Forensics Anthropologist. The few of amount of interviewers that I was left with can be identical to the amount of polar bears that are left in Antarctica, to be exact there are 50 Board Certified Forensics Anthropologist in the World.
The feeling that I experienced as I was welcomed in the facility of the veterinarians office was warm and gentle. The assistants played a major role in the care-taking of the animals and the helping of the Doctor. The doctor gained his name because he was the one with the most educational record, meaning he gained his PHD by having more time spent in University. The value for an assistant is a crucial necessity of my eyes because the job of the doctor is to examine and perform surgeries on the animals while the assistant has to make sure the animal is prepared and well-kept for the procedure. Some examples of this will be the grooming around the place where the surgery will take place, the giving of the shot and giving oxygen to calm the animal. Once, the surgeries began the Doctor informed me that he previously had a student from my school who shadowed him as well, however, the kid fainted when the incisures on the animal began so he was unable to shadow and was sent home. I took in the information he had given me and tried to maintain a well-kept stomach and mind in order to continue the shadow.
The doctor’s first surgery began with the neutering of a cat, he showed me the ovaries, stomach and the“pee-sack” of the cat, this surgery went fairly well. The surgery that created a great impact in the realization of becoming of veterinarian was the neutering of a pregnant dog, one by one the doctor took out the puppies, the puppies were still moving it was until the doctor cut off their oxygen supply when the puppies we no longer breathing. It was this surgery that I could not tolerate and suddenly I became woozy, nauseous, and a great stream of depression arose. However, this was not the only operation that cut into my heart, there was also the putting down of a dog who developed bone cancer near his brain, dark green stuff poured out as the Doctor punctured were the lump was at, the owner of the dog said her last goodbyes to the dog and asked for the dog to be cremated.
I began to wonder why neither the assistants nor the doctor were devastated by what was occurring, then I realized may it have been the amount of time they been enclosed in this type of situations? The assistant later told me a story about a time where she observed a cat getting hit by a car, then a homeless person grabbing the cat and slamming it against the concrete floor.
The amount of knowledge and experience that I gained from shadowing a veterinarian made me realize that I particularly would not like to work in that certain field. I would be incapable of adjusting to the amount of heart-breaks and obligation come with the title of a veterinarian. For this reason the shadowing of a vet was a good decision because it was experiences that lead to my decision.
